The definition of violence includes verbal abuse and threats as well as physical violence. Reporting verbal abuse and threats can help in identifying further actions that can reasonably be taken to reduce risks, such as changes in site layout, procedures or additional training.

HSE’s web pages on work related violence highlight initiatives undertaken to tackle this issue in partnership with other organisations, including the TUC.

GMB has launched its Violence in Schools survey aimed at members working as school support staff. More than 100 responses have been received to date. Headline findings so far are that 69% of respondents have been subjected to violence or physical abuse in the past year, while 76% have been subjected to verbal abuse. 63% of violent incidents are recorded, compared to only 37% of verbal abuse incidents. GMB aims to tackle the issue through developing leading indicators and early warning systems.
