This qualification is accredited and falls under the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). It is supported by Skills for Health and the Sector Skills Council for Health. It aligns with the requirements of the HSE GB and HSE NI.

Learning and Assessment--

Guided tuition involves:

  • 4 continuous day
  • 2 blocks x 2 days
  • 4 blocks x 1 day

Minimum contact hours (MCH) are those times when the learner is in the same room as the tutor and receiving training, or undertaking examinations or assessment.

For this course MLH are 32 hours with ongoing assessment over 4 classroom days to cover Units 1 and 3. Unit 2 is a workplace case study.


Assessment for this course includes:

Practical demonstration. Ongoing assessments demonstrating practical first aid skills.

Oral and Written Assessment. Ongoing questioning that allows candidates to demonstrate knowledge and understanding.


Demonstration. How to place pads and follow instructions on an (AED) Automatic External Defibrillator. Demonstrate the use of an AED with little delay in CPR using a manikin and state the procedures if the casualty shows signs of life and starts to breathe normally. Identify the information required when handing over the casualty to paramedics

Assignment. Completion of a Workplace Case Study.

Course Requirements--

ID Requirements

To be assessed, you must be able to provide sufficient ID. Examples include:

  • Valid passport
  • Signed UK photocard driving licence
  • Valid warrant card issued by HM Forces or Police
  • Other photographic ID cards e.g. valid warrant card issued by HM Forces, Police, employee ID card, student ID card, travel card.

Language Requirements

All assessment will be conducted in English. You must have sufficient language skills before being assessed. You should have language skills equivalent to:

  • A B1 Level qualification
  • An ESOL qualification at (Level 1) on the Ofqual register taken in England, Wales or Northern Ireland
  • A functional skills Level 1 in English.


The qualification is valid for 3 years. Learners should also refresh their knowledge annually.

Requalification has recommended course duration of 2 days and cannot be reduced. To take requalification training, learners must present a valid FAW certificate at the start of the course, or they must complete 3 full days.
